Built in 1904, this beautiful wooden church is not only a spiritual hub but also a piece of architecture that has been recognized on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976.

A Unique Journey Across the River

One of the most fascinating stories surrounding the Immaculate Conception Church is how it was originally constructed on the south side of the Chena River and later moved across via an ice bridge. This remarkable feat of logistics adds a unique chapter to its already impressive history. Many visitors appreciate the historical significance of this small yet impactful structure.

A Hub of Activity and Service

In addition to regular Mass services held daily and over the weekend, the church also runs important community programs, including a soup kitchen that provides meals for the homeless and those in need. Volunteers prepare brown bag lunches on weekdays and host a community meal every Saturday at 11 am and Sunday at 11:30 am. This commitment to service reflects the church’s mission to nurture not only the spiritual but also the physical well-being of the community.

This lovely wooden Catholic church stands tall above the Chena River right in the center of Fairbanks.

After departing from the Spring Hill Suite Hotel for a leisurely stroll, I couldn't help but notice how the church was illuminated by vibrant LED lights, making it a prominent presence in the nighttime scenery of Fairbanks.

As I meandered along the Chena River, my eyes kept being pulled back to the church. Though I wasn't able to venture inside, as it had closed at 5 pm, the imposing glass door provided a glimpse of the exquisite stained glass windows and other interior decor, captivating me from the exterior.

This church is a quaint, white, and tidy little place of worship. With Maria at the front and the stunning side view of the building, it truly exudes a sense of holiness. Even for those who may not practice the faith, one can't help but feel a divine presence when visiting. A must-see spot for visitors to Fairbanks.

So we went for some lunch and to check out the church ... The lady who served us was quite unpleasant and unwelcoming ...

Christina Graham (6/23/25, 5:59 AM):
This quaint cathedral can be found nestled in the heart of the city center. Just a short stroll across the bridge, you'll come across a charming white cathedral on your right-hand side. Despite its compact size, it often goes unnoticed by passersby. Situated along the riverside, the surrounding scenery adds to its allure.
Philip Morris (6/22/25, 12:40 PM):
The finest spot in Fairbanks to give praise and pay a visit to our Lord in the Holy Eucharist. Father Tom is a marvelous, spiritual guide.
