I ventured on a pilgrimage to pay homage to St. Herman of Alaska. I must say, it was an absolutely remarkable experience. The folks there were ever so hospitable, the divine presence was truly palpable, and the church ambiance and hymns were simply exquisite.

I was stationed at the Marine Barracks in Kodak from 1967 to 1968 and had the opportunity to visit the Russian Orthodox church on several occasions. It's a truly beautiful place with a rich history and stunning architecture. The experience of attending services there was truly unique and memorable.

I do believe this to be the oldest Orthodox parish in America. How I do wish I had those walk-through pictures, as everyone was ever so gracious. I find religion to hold great potential for fostering inner peace. During my time there, I shared quarters with a fellow angler who was anticipating his next steps post-seminary in Serbia. I made the decision to distance myself from social media, leading me to lose touch with some former acquaintances. The thought of embracing a monastic way of life has long intrigued me. The ambiance of the place was truly serene and comforting, evoking a sense of belonging within me. I believe they refer to it as monasticism.

I absolutely adored the cathedral and the folks I encountered there. Father Innocent was simply fantastic in arranging and coordinating the visit of pilgrims and clergy for the yearly Saint Herman pilgrimage to Spruce Island. He graciously spent more than an hour with me, which was truly delightful. I feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced it all.

This here is the church of my ancestors, gifted by Saint Andrew the Apostle to the Russians, then passed on to the native Alaskans and America. It all started right here in Alaska. The Orthodox Church, it is the one true Apostolic Church. I pray and hope that we can share the joyful tidings of His Resurrection with all folk in Alaska and all over America. The Orthodox Church, it is open to all, for every person and every race. In this Church, there exists no distinction between Greek or Jew, man or woman, for all are united in Christ. Amen.
